History

St Bernard's United Football Club situated in the village of Abbeyknockmoy was founded in 1972 and caters for players from Abbeyknockmoy and surrounding parishes.

The clubs founding members were Val Dolan, Michael Mullins, Frank Boyle, Gerry Flaherty and the Keane Brothers John, Mike and Tom and their initiative and foresight has become an integral part of our parish. Our club has been on an incredible journey both on the field of play and in facility development over the past 46 years.

Off the field our club has won the Michael O Flaherty “Galway & District League Club of the Year” on two occasions in 2008 and 2016.

On the field our club has had many successes at junior and underage levels over the years, with our club reaching the pinnacle of Galway & District League soccer by capturing the Junior Premier league in 2016- 17, this victory captured the imagination of the Abbeyknockmoy community and vast surrounding areas, while giving belief to rural clubs that “yes” what seems impossible is absolutely possible. Captured perfectly in the picture from the Connacht Tribune with the heading “ Dreams really do come true”.

The clubs underage structure has always been successful yielding many triumphs and producing many players who have represented the Galway & District League and Galway United respectively. A huge success for our club since 2015 has been our academy which has gone from strength to strength since its inception and currently has 150 members.
